The little cinema was nearly empty when Keanu noticed an elderly woman standing at the end of his row.<\/p>\n
\u201cIs anyone sitting here?\u201d she asked.<\/p>\n
He moved his jacket from the seat.<\/p>\n
\u201cNo. Please.\u201d<\/p>\n
She sat carefully, holding two tickets in one hand. When the lights dimmed, she placed the second ticket on the empty seat beside her.<\/p>\n
Halfway through the movie, someone on screen told a terrible joke. The woman laughed, then turned toward the empty seat.<\/p>\n
Her smile disappeared before she faced the screen again.<\/p>\n
After the credits, Keanu stayed seated while she gathered her things.<\/p>\n
\u201cMy husband would have hated that ending,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
\u201cToo happy?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cToo easy.\u201d She smiled faintly. \u201cHe always wanted everyone to earn their happy ending.\u201d<\/p>\n
She looked down at the tickets.<\/p>\n
They had come to this cinema every Thursday for thirty-eight years. Same row. Same seats. He bought the tickets; she chose the sweets.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe died in February,\u201d she said. \u201cTonight was the first time I managed to come back.\u201d<\/p>\n

Before leaving, she asked whether he thought she should return next Thursday.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf you want to see the movie,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cAnd if I buy two tickets again?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cThen you buy two tickets.\u201d<\/p>\n
She nodded, relieved by the smallness of the answer.<\/p>\n
The following Thursday, she returned.<\/p>\n
At the counter, she asked for one ticket. Then she stood there a moment, looking at the coins in her palm.<\/p>\n
\u201cAnd a packet of chocolate raisins, please.\u201d<\/p>\n
She had never liked them.<\/p>\n
