The 77-year-old singer is taking time away from the stage after treatment for atrial fibrillation. His representative says the procedure went well and Richie plans to perform again.

Lionel Richie has spent decades turning a concert into a celebration. Audiences arrive ready to sing, dance and revisit the songs that have marked moments in their lives. This week, however, the music has paused: Richie underwent a heart procedure, and three upcoming shows with Earth, Wind & Fire have been canceled.

Richie, 77, was hospitalized for treatment of atrial fibrillation, commonly called AFib. His representative told People that he underwent an ablation procedure and that the doctor said it “went perfectly.” The representative added that Richie is doing well, will take some time off and expects to return to the stage.

The update brings some reassurance, but it also follows several health-related interruptions during his tour this year. For fans who were looking forward to seeing him perform, the cancellations are disappointing. For now, the clearest news is that Richie is recovering and giving himself time before his next appearance.

Three concerts affected

""

Richie and Earth, Wind & Fire have canceled performances scheduled for September 26 in San Francisco, September 30 in Chicago, and October 2 in Columbus, Ohio. The shows were part of their Sing a Song All Night Long tour.

The San Francisco concert had already been moved from an earlier date. Chicago and Columbus fans had also experienced schedule changes after Richie became ill during a June performance. That makes the latest announcement especially frustrating for ticket holders who had kept their plans in place. According to the San Francisco Chronicle, refunds are available through the original point of purchase; fans should check their venue or ticket seller for the instructions that apply to their show.

Richie’s representative has said he intends to return to performing, but the health update did not confirm a date for his return. Any future schedule changes will need to come from Richie’s team, the venues or tour organizers.

What is atrial fibrillation?

Atrial fibrillation is an irregular heart rhythm that begins in the heart’s upper chambers. The condition can affect how efficiently the heart moves blood and may increase the risk of serious complications, including stroke. Its effects and treatment vary from person to person, so a diagnosis alone does not tell the public exactly what an individual patient’s recovery will look like.

The procedure Richie underwent, called ablation, is used to stop electrical signals that cause an abnormal heartbeat. In catheter ablation, a doctor guides a thin tube through a blood vessel to the heart and treats a small area of tissue responsible for the faulty signals. The American Heart Association says recovery is usually short, although AFib can return and some people need continued treatment or another procedure.

Richie’s representative has shared a positive account of how his procedure went. No detailed treatment plan or precise return date has been publicly confirmed in that statement.

A challenging few months on tour

This is not the first time Richie’s health has affected his performances in 2026. In June, he told an audience in St. Paul, Minnesota, that he felt dizzy during a show. He sat down while performing “Dancing on the Ceiling,” and the concert ended early. Two later shows were postponed so he could rest. Richie returned to the stage on June 30.

Then, after a performance in St. Louis on August 29, Richie checked himself into a hospital. Reports at the time said he spent three days there, including time in intensive care, while doctors conducted cardiac tests. He was released on September 2.

His current hospitalization marks another interruption in a short period. It is understandable that fans are concerned, particularly after seeing shows moved more than once. Still, the recent incidents do not establish details about Richie’s long-term health beyond what his medical team and representative have disclosed. The confirmed update is that his ablation went well and that he is taking time to recover.

Why Lionel Richie’s absence is felt

Richie’s concerts draw on a catalog that has remained familiar across generations. Songs such as “Hello,” “All Night Long” and “Dancing on the Ceiling” invite very different kinds of memories: a quiet evening, a crowded dance floor, a celebration with friends. Hearing those songs performed live is part of what fans have been waiting for on this tour.

Sharing the bill with Earth, Wind & Fire adds another reason the concerts have been anticipated. Both acts are associated with music that brings large audiences together. A canceled show means more than a changed night out for people who traveled, arranged time away from work or planned to attend with family. It also explains why news of Richie’s recovery matters to so many listeners.

The singer has previously acknowledged that support. After returning to performing earlier this summer, he thanked fans for their messages and kind words in a July post. His representative’s latest update again points toward a return, once Richie has had time to rest.

What happens next?

For now, the three announced tour dates are canceled. Ticket holders should follow updates from their venues and original ticket sellers for refund or scheduling information. Fans should also wait for an official announcement before making plans around any future performance date.

The most encouraging part of the news is the statement from Richie’s representative: his procedure went well, and he wants to be back on stage. Until then, the songs will still be there for the audiences who know them by heart—and the hope is that Richie will soon feel ready to sing them with those audiences again.
