His family said Sheik would also be remembered for “his sensitivity, wit, intelligence, and depth of spirit he brought to those who knew and loved him.”

“We are deeply grateful for the outpouring of love from his fans, friends, collaborators, and the artistic community,” they added. “His musical legacy will continue to inspire generations to come.”

News of Sheik’s death came just one day after his family revealed that he was seriously ill.

On Wednesday, they announced on Instagram that the musician was “receiving medical care” and was in “critical but stable condition.”

At the time, the family did not reveal what had happened to Sheik or provide specific medical details. They asked for privacy as they navigated the “difficult time” and thanked fans for their “love and support.”

Sheik rose to fame in the 1990s and quickly became known for his thoughtful songwriting and distinctive voice.

Born in Montclair, New Jersey, in 1969, Sheik developed an interest in music at a young age. He later attended Brown University, where he studied semiotics before pursuing music professionally.

His career took off with the release of his self-titled debut album in 1996. The record featured “Barely Breathing,” the song that would become his biggest pop hit.

The track became a major radio success and spent more than a year on the Billboard Hot 100. It also earned Sheik a Grammy Award for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance.

Although “Barely Breathing” made him famous to mainstream audiences, Sheik continued experimenting with different styles throughout his career. He released several albums, including Humming, Phantom Moon, Daylight, White Limousine and Legerdemain.

He eventually found another major creative home in theater.

Sheik composed the music for Spring Awakening, the Broadway musical based on Frank Wedekind’s controversial 1891 play. Steven Sater wrote the book and lyrics.

The musical became one of the defining Broadway productions of the 2000s after opening in 2006. Its original cast included future stars Jonathan Groff, Lea Michele and John Gallagher Jr.

Spring Awakening earned widespread acclaim and won eight Tony Awards in 2007, including Best Musical. Sheik personally won Tony Awards for Best Original Score and Best Orchestrations.

He also received a Grammy for the musical’s original Broadway cast recording.

The success transformed Sheik from a singer-songwriter known largely for one massive pop hit into one of the most respected composers working in modern musical theater.

His stage career continued with projects including American Psycho, Alice by Heart, Whisper House and The Secret Life of Bees. His music often blended pop, rock and atmospheric sounds with emotionally complex stories.

Sheik was still actively creating music and theater projects at the time of his death.

His latest project, Memoirs of Amorous Gentlemen, was scheduled to begin Off-Broadway previews next week. Another revival of Spring Awakening was also preparing to launch later this year.

Over a career spanning three decades, Sheik managed to succeed in two very different musical worlds. He first captured the public’s attention as the voice behind “Barely Breathing,” then reinvented himself as an acclaimed theater composer whose work helped shape a new generation of Broadway musicals.
